VAMOS! STORIES
YERITL’S STORY

Step through the door at our downtown Cuernavaca center called Casa Tatic and you’ll hear all of the normal sounds of a well-run school – teachers speaking to a class, children working on projects, computer keyboards clicking and pre-school children laughing and playing. There is clearly a warm and welcoming atmosphere here. Now, head down the hall to where our 5th and 6th grade children are learning and there, sitting at her table, you’ll meet the heart of the center. Her name is Yeritl, she is 14 years old and has been coming to Casa Tatic with her mother since she was nine. Yeritl is a young woman with both learning disabilities and special abilities. One of her special skills is bringing people together and helping them to see the best in themselves.
How does she do that?
She asks people to help her.
And they do. And when they do she listens, and works and studies and practices. Her classmates use words like loving, friendly, enthusiastic and positive to describe her. She is an incredibly hard worker. She arrived not knowing her letters or numbers and now she can read, and add and subtract! She insists on learning something new every day. And she has inspired others too! Like her mother, who also could not read. Now the two of them are reading superstars and help others who are having trouble. They say, “We did it, you can do it too!” How great is that?
But this was not always the case for Yeritl. She was shy and introverted when she first arrived. There are not a lot of options for children like her in the poor neighborhoods of Cuernavaca. That is why the warm and welcoming atmosphere here, and inside all of the VAMOS! centers, is so important. No matter what, no matter how poor, how smart or how hungry you are, at VAMOS! you will be loved. And you will shine!

We all have special needs and special skills too. Your support really does makes a difference in people’s lives here. Just ask the heart of Casa Tatic!
