MEALS / NUTRITION
Meals / Nutrition
In 1987, when VAMOS! began, the first thing that women asked for was food for their children. Our response was to serve a daily meal. Since that time VAMOS! has served more than 4 million fresh, nutritious meals to the women and children who come to our Community Centers. It is hard to learn in school when you are hungry. For many of our families the meal they receive from VAMOS! is their only meal of the day. It certainly is the healthiest. Our cooks are trained in preparing healthy meals packed with protein and vitamins. In the poor neighborhoods where VAMOS! Centers are located, the malnutrition rate is close to 40% for children and the elderly, yet among those who attend VAMOS!, the rate of malnutrition is zero. Combining school, healthy meals, nutrition education, and regular health checkups, VAMOS! has successfully erased malnutrition from the lives of our families.
Good Nutrition is the first line of defense against numerous childhood diseases, which can leave their mark on a child for life. In the area of cognitive development, “when there isn’t enough food, the body has to make a decision about how to invest the limited foodstuffs available. Survival comes first. Growth comes second. In this nutritional triage, the body seems obliged to rank learning last. Better to be stupid and alive than smart and dead” (Sagan and Druyan). -World Bank Report on Childhood Nutrition
THE VAMOS! IMPACT
Addressing Hunger: The most immediate impact is addressing hunger among our poor families. Access to regular meals can ensure that families, particularly children, have the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development.
Improving Health: Proper nutrition is crucial for overall health. According to our Doctor, VAMOS! has all but eliminated malnutrition-related illnesses in our families and increased their overall immune function.
Improving Learning: When children have access to regular meals, they are better able to concentrate and perform well in school. Improved nutrition can positively impact cognitive development, potentially breaking the cycle of poverty by providing children with better educational opportunities.
Alleviating Financial Strain: Families living in poverty often struggle to afford basic necessities, including food. By providing meals, VAMOS! alleviates some of the financial strain on these families, allowing them to redirect funds toward other essential needs such as housing, and transportation.
Empowering Communities: By working with local partners and suppliers, the program also stimulates the local economy, creating income opportunities for small businesses and farmers.
SINCE OUR START IN 1987, VAMOS! HAS SERVED MORE THAN
4.3 MILLION MEALS TO WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN MEXICO.
